ART. 5 – ADMITTED BICYCLES, CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES

 Eroica Germania is an event for VINTAGE ROAD BICYCLES or VINTAGE- LOOKING ROAD BICYCLES and is dedicated to cyclists wearing vintage or vintage looking clothing.

5.1 - Bicycles

Eroica Germania must be completed only with the following bicycles:

- vintage road bicycles (so-called BICI EROICHE), as described in paragraph 5.1.a;

- vintage looking road bicycles, including newly built bikes, as described in the below paragraph 5.1.b.;

5.1.a – Bici Eroiche or vintage road bicycles

BICI EROICHE are steel road bicycles built up to and including 1987, both with and without gears, such as those from the late 19th or early 20th centuries. Alan and Vitus aluminium frames with screwed or glued lugs are allowed.

Regarding components, bicycles must follow these general guidelines:

1. Bicycles with gears and derailleurs must have down-tube shifters; exceptions are pre-1980 non indexed bar-end shifters

2. Pedals must have toe clips and straps. Quick release and clip-less pedals are not allowed

3. Brake cables must be externally routed (cables can pass through the frame);

4. Wheels must have at least 32 spokes laced into a low profile rim (20 mm depth or less); rims must be made of steel, aluminium or wood

 5. Both tubular tyres and clinchers with inner tubes are allowed

6. Saddles should be from the same period of the bicycle; alternatively we

suggest a modern saddle with vintage look

7. Larger cassettes are allowed

Early 20th century bicycles without gears or equipped with Vittoria, Simplex and Campagnolo rod-operated gear systems do not need to comply with the above criteria as long as they have their original components.

5.1.b – Vintage looking or modern built road bicycle

Newly manufactured steel road bicycles with vintage look may be used only if they are assembled with vintage components or new parts similar to the originals, as described above.

5.1.c - Waivers and exemptions

On request, exceptions regarding the type of bicycle may be granted to participants with disabilities.

On the short route, other types of vintage bicycles will be admitted, such as postman’s bikes, general working bicycles, leisure bicycles, etc.

Mountain bikes are excluded from all routes.

Participants will be disqualified if their bicycles do not follow such rules. 5.2 – Clothing

Participants are strongly encouraged to wear vintage or vintage looking cycling gear, such as wool jerseys and shorts and to avoid wearing modern technical gear in a visible way. The Organisation reserves the right to disqualify any participant whose behaviour is considered inappropriate.

 Should photographic or video evidence of irregular behaviour come available after the event, the Organisation reserves the right to exclude those responsible from the event.

5.3 - Accessories

According to the event philosophy, participants are invited to carefully select all their accessories, from shoes to caps and water bottles etc. The only modern cycling accessory allowed is a safety-cycling helmet, which we invite everybody to use.

If a registered cyclist is unable to participate in the event, the registration fee will not be refunded and the race pack will not be sent. The Organisation

 reserves the right to judge whether cancellations are the result of “an objective impossibility to participate because of injury”, as documented by a medical report. In such cases, the registration fee will be considered valid for the following year. Any registration considered valid for the following year is strictly personal and cannot be transferred to any third party and will be only valid for the year following.
